Establish a Sustainable Ecological City

Eco-city

Eco-city Freiburg

Professor Lin Zhengyi, an economist who studies ecological cities, said that what impressed him most was Freiburg, Germany, with a population of 220,000. Residents have a strong sense of environmental protection. People are mainly riding bicycles or trams. There are rare vehicles on the streets. Garbage is classified, recycled and reused. Local governments actively plan to become environmentally friendly cities, promote energy-saving buildings and use high-tech energy-saving equipment. All these make Freiburg the German "green capital".

Traffic Construction Taking Humanities, Environmental Protection and Road Rights into Account

There are now more than 900 solar charging stations in and around Freiburg. In order to fully promote the use of solar energy, and to facilitate the public and foreign visitors to inquiries, there is a consulting service center near the station, that is providing information on the intentional installation of solar energy facilities. In general, only one or two light rail tram systems run through the city center. In general, only one or two light rail tram systems run through the city center. However, in this ancient city, there is a 15.5-kilometer-long river that has been nicknamed “small stream” by the locals. The planning and construction of the small stream does not affect pedestrians, bicycles and cars. It has become a major feature of the city. Light rail trams are installed along small channels without the need to cover the ditch. There are no road markings to protect the natural landscape of the environment. Not only does it not affect the overall traffic of the street, but also takes the environment and preservation of regional culture into account.

Residents Participate in the Planning of Ecological Communities

The main feature of Vauban, a rejuvenated community in the old city of Freiburg, is that the residents participate in the design of green space and ecological environment. Solar photovoltaic panels are used on the roof, and environmentally-friendly building materials are widely used. The concept of rainwater reuse is used for watering and planting, and the ecological community connects the creek. The newer buildings are all energy-efficient buildings. The use of bicycles, light rail trams and other green vehicles naturally reduces the demand for cars. Energy conservation is also used in everyday life, such as the implementation of shared garages, the implementation of shared refrigerators and washing machines, leaving space and roads for kids and pedestrians to use, and implementing healthy, sustainable, energy-saving lifestyles to provide higher quality environmental life. It has become a residential technology that takes energy use, ecological maintenance and architectural aesthetics into account.

Using Technology to Save Energy and Build an Eco City

Another project, Sonnenschiff, designed by Rolf Disch, a solar construction industry master, was completed in 2006. The exterior design resembles a ship. The inclined roof is like a sail and solar photovoltaic panels, while the vents are like two large ship chimneys. It is a novel building integrating solar photovoltaic design for commercial office use. There is a large supermarket on the first floor and a parking lot in the basement. The design philosophy of the plus energy house is to reduce energy requirements for heating, ventilation, cooling and lighting of buildings, in addition to advanced insulation, ventilation and glass technology. And with the use of natural and recyclable building materials, the impact on the environment is reduced. Regardless of the ancient city or the renewed community, under the consensus and joint efforts of all citizens, Freiburg City not only exerts its abundant sunshine advantages, but also devotes itself to the research of solar photovoltaic systems and strives to maintain regional culture and architecture. It is a sustainable development and an ecological city.
