Establish a Sustainable Ecological City

City Crisis

Urban Expansion

The Trajectory of Urban Development ~ From the Green to Cement

Professor Lin Zhengyi believes that the development of each metropolis is a modern city transformed from a beautiful countryside into a reinforced concrete. As the population continues to increase, the city also continues to flourish, and even continue to expand to the suburbs of the city. However, the serious environment is the price of urban expansion. Due to the advantages of abundant urban resources, employment opportunities and convenient transportation, the concentration of population in the metropolitan area has also resulted in the overdevelopment of limited urban land. Various kinds of hardware construction gradually replace the existing green areas and pastoral areas. This not only makes the relationship between mankind and the natural environment lopsided, the space for human activities is shrinking day by day, but also destroys the original biological habitat.

The Price of Urban Development

In the past, the city originally had beautiful green areas or ecologically rich wetlands. Nowadays, in order to meet the needs of life, most of the rural green spaces and wetlands have become residential areas, roads, shopping areas, parking lots, sports and leisure venues, incinerators or landfills. Survival of rare green space and wetlands also face the risk of disappearing.

Continued Expansion of the Land has Resulted in Ecological Problems

Professor Lin Zhengyi mentioned that looking down at Taiwan from a height, he saw an over-developed broken land. In fact, Taiwan is not large in size. There are many mountains, few plains and a very densely populated land. Land resources are limited. Under this kind of pressure, resourses are usually over-exploited and utilized. Plains and basins have been over-developed. People continue to develop hills, mountains. As a result of over-expansion, many hillsides have been reclaimed and over-built. The original soil and water conservation has been destroyed, and that causes major impact and harm to the environment and human health. Therefore, how to find a balance between development and conservation has become the most important issue of sustainable development.

Top Priority: Stop Urban Land Expansion

In recent years, urban land expansion has seriously affected soil and water conservation, ecological environment and transportation. Therefore, the urban development should be stopped and the existing land and buildings in the city center should be updated and reused to reduce the destruction on green space and ecological environment.

Mobirise

The city should stop development to retain the original ecological green space.
