Urban Heat Island Effect

When everyone is planning a summer vacation there, can you notice that the weather is hot recently? There are nearly 38 degrees of temperature in Taiwan for two days in a row, and many people ask what is going on in summer. Why summer is hot every year? Experts say this is because the urban heat caused by the heat island effect is a common climate anomaly in major cities all over the world. Simply speaking, whenever the urban temperature is higher than the surrounding areas. It is an issue that deserves everyone's attention.

Human Needs Accelerated the Heat Island Effect

The concentration of population causes the growth of the city. The growing size of the city has increased the amount of heat released and can not be dissipated. Trees and woodlands around the city have been continuously cut, and replaced by more roads and buildings. These buildings do not have the function of cooling and soil and water conservation, and extensive asphalt and concrete pavements absorb large amounts of heat during the daytime. Large amounts of air pollutants hinder and reduce the cooling of ground radiant heat at night. Coupled with factories and vehicles emit large amounts of heat containing exhaust gas, and air-conditioners emit heat, all make the urban areas like a warming island. The city temperature is higher than the surrounding, as if the entire city covered with a circular hot-air roof. We call this phenomenon “the heat island effect.”

Urban Heat Island Effect Will be More Serious

The urban heat island effect is a detrimental impact on urban ecology. The effects include: (1) high temperature, (2) desiccation, (3) reduced insolation, (4) increased cloud cover, (5) increased foggy days, (6) increased rainfall, (7) increased average wind speed, (8) Air pollution. Due to the heat island effect, the temperature in Taipei rises year by year. In recent years, the temperature of Taipei City in July and August is usually over 35 ℃. In addition, due to the heavy use of refrigerants and the emission of exhaust gases by vehicles, the atmospheric carbon dioxide is greatly increased. As a result, the entire planet produces the greenhouse effect and the global temperature is getting higher and higher. Therefore, the weather in summer is hoter and hoter.

Mobirise

Cement and asphalt, motor vehicles, air-conditioners, lighting and other emissions of hot gas has caused a vicious cycle

Mobirise

Once the rising hot airstream encounters a strong cold air mass, it is easier to form a heavy rain.

Top Priority: Urban Transformation

Generation of heat island effect is caused by city planing without careful consideration of the environment. Improvements include retrofitting of block buildings and reviewing them from the statutory level of urban planning. Specifically, improvements to the building base include: (1) rewards environmental afforestation in buildings and parking lots; (2) promotion of water-permeable road pavement technologies and improvement of rainwater recycling systems; (3) promotion of green roofs or highly reflective coatings on the roofs to curb heat storage on the roof of buildings. Measures taken at the overall level include: (1) expanding conservation of urban green spaces, rivers and farmlands and other natural environments; (2) the new buildings should meet the energy conservation standards; (3) the building configuration in the urban planning complies with the natural topography and direction to enhance block ventilation. In short, only various ways are tried together, and do them continually, it is possible to transform the heat island for the oasis!
