Air Pollution Sources ~ Excessive Number of Motorcycles

As the global economy takes off, Lin Zhengyi professor from the Institute of Education Department of Social and Regional Development, National Taipei University, believes that the increasing number of cars and motorcycles has become a major source of pollution in many cities. Most people think that the factory discharge most of PM2.5, but in the metropolitan area, the motor vehicle emissions is the main source of pollution, accounting for nearly half. Vehicles cause serious traffic congestion in the city. The emissions from the vehicles make the city's air quality worse and affect the health of city people. Vehicles' emissions and waste heat make the entire city like an oven during the summer time, and cause a more serious vicious cycle of high energy consumption that can not be cooled naturally.

Exhaust Emissions are not Easy to Spread

Nearly five million cars and motorcycles are registered in Taipei. Many commuters rely on cars andmotorcycles as commuter tools. During the rush hour, many important roads are filled with commuter cars. The main source of air pollution in Taipei is cars and motorcycles. Air pollutants emitted by cars and motorcycles make people's health extremely seriously harmed. Air pollutant concentration and meteorological conditions in Taipei City are the main causes of poor air quality. Taipei is located in the Taipei basin, and is crowded with tall buildings. Whenever climatic conditions are poor, the horizontal wind speed is too low, coupled with the occur of thermal inversion layer (when the atmospheric temperature increases with height, the atmosphere is called temperature inversion), air pollutants do not spread easily.

Top Priority: To Change the Habit of Using Transport

In order to reduce the number of motor vehicles and pollution emissions, in fact, we can start from the transport options. Such as walking or using bicycles, buses, MRT, trains, high-speed rail and other carriers. We can also choose to buy electric vehicles as a means of transport. There are already more and more people participating in bike commuting and sports. It helps to reduce the use of motor vehicles, and helps to improve the traffic congestion in city, the environmental pollution and energy loss.
